IPL or Indian Premier League is a twenty-twenty cricket tournaments created as well as promoted by BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and backed by ICC (International Cricket Council). It is a professional league that debuted on 18th April 2008, with eight teams comprising a minimum of 16 players each. The tournament lasted for 44 days and involved 59 matches.

The innovative aspect of the Indian Premier League is that the players would be auctioned to the different participating teams and the one with highest bidder will win the player. The per-allocated players such as Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh and Sourav Ganguly would not be included in the auction. All these per-allocated players will play for their respective state teams.

Total eight teams participate in this tournament. The first season of the IPL was won by the Rajasthan Royals against Chennai Super Kings. The second season of the IPL is expected to kick off from April 10th, 2009 and end on May 29th, 2009. The game format of IPL 2009 will remain the same as the IPL 2008. All the eight franchises will first play against one another and the top four teams will play for semi finals and final. The only changes that have been made in the IPL 2009 are that the number of foreign players in a team has been increased from 8 to 10 and the limit of players purchase has been increased from 5 to 7 million.
